Simon Botes
Founder: AppCRAFT
Simon Botes is not a techie.
He's just a family guy who
likes to bring good ideas and
technology together on a
mobile platform.
It all started when he pitched
his mobile snake guide to the
Nokia Ovi store in 2009. They
awarded him fourth prize in
their Nokia Calling All Innovators
Africa competition. In 2010 his
eLiteracy application, which
teaches early literacy through
games, took top honours
globally.
Little did this tech
community know that AppCRAFT was just a small start-up based in a valley
outside Plettenberg Bay. That's mobile technology for you. Already more than
75 000 people in 178 countries have downloaded one of AppCRAFT's many free
educational applications, including sign language and Morse code.
Just imagine the power it has to bring free education to the most remote and
rural areas of South Africa. It's all part of Botes's greater plan: to prove to the
world that more good can come out of South Africa. - Cat Pritchard
